first Sold out headline tour may be the duo’s only

Loyal fans of both DJ and producer Kaytranada and rapper Aminé descended upon Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre for the last show of the “Kaytraminé Live” tour on September 16, 2023. Consisting of a mere five date run, all performances quickly sold out, with LA being a hot ticket as fans crowded all entries into the venue. Light drizzle hung in the air but that didn’t stop people from dancing the night away to a mixture of the duo’s album, plus solo cuts from each.

A DJ set and performance by Lou Phelps provided the opening of the night with the rapper exclaiming “Y’all are better than New York.” The event looked almost oversold; fans lined up along most of the walls separating the various sections of the Greek. People in sky blue hoodies holding their vinyls flooded the general admission pit area when the lights darkened. Kaytranada appeared on stage at a desk of sorts, booting up the show when Aminé walked out and the pair performed a set dedicated to their collaborative record. They played off one another, dancing circles around the stage, until Aminé commanded the floor while Kaytranada took the helm of a massive stage deck complete with LED screens.

After playing most of the album including “UGH UGH” and “Master P” complete with an appearance from Big Sean, Kaytranada left the stage to Aminé who played around a 20 minute set of his own tracks, to the delight of the audience. It was something unexpected, as many artists will opt to play one or two of their own songs as compared to a mini set, but the Portland rapper gave fans “Shimmy” and arguably his most popular track, “Caroline.” Kaytranada had a turn of his own, swapping with Aminé and turning the Greek into a club, performing “YOU’RE THE ONE” and “Be Your Girl” among others. Stage lighting was heavy hitting, with effects creating an almost Oppenheimer look for the DJ’s performance. The lightning alone was worth the price of admission, designed by Jaycob Luque of MJL Visions. While among the audience in the front, fans were overheard talking about how intricate and “amazing” the stage was. It emulated a character of its own during the concert because it was given a personality; it wasn’t simply a tool to hold the artists up.

Kaytranada concluded his set with “Opulence” which quickly transitioned to “Rebuke,” queuing Aminé to return for the finale of Kaytraminé. The pair ended strong with popular tracks “Sossaup” and their first single “4EVA.” They reprised both tracks for a quick encore, saying bye to fans and telling everyone it was the last Kaytraminé show of the tour. With the stage set up, lighting configurations, all on top of the artists themselves making an aggressive amount of energy and entertainment, the set felt as if it was over in a flash. Kaytraminé recreated the album cover during their set, delivered mini solo performances, and Aminé gifted a pair of shoes from his recent collaboration with New Balance right off his feet to a fan in the pit. There was no mention of whether the group would return or not, but it was apparent how much chemistry the two share on stage and in the studio. Fans would most likely be there for it, but for now, the project served as a fun side quest and show spectacle for those lucky enough to attend one of five performances.
