Jockstrap return to US with ambient glamour
SECOND US TOUR FEATURED SOLD OUT STOP AT FONDA
The historic Fonda Theatre in Hollywood, California held a line sprawling around the corner with eager fans waiting to catch British experimental pop group Jockstrap live. Sepia tinted lights illuminated the dreary yet busy streets, which made the marquee stand out that much more. Loud bass could be heard as people made their way through metal detectors.
The duo made up of Black Country, New Road member Georgia Ellery and producer Taylor Skye are quite the combo, with their debut full length I Love You Jennifer B being nominated for the Mercury Prize. At 9PM, audience members at the barrier yelled as both members made their way to the stage, with Skye admitting “I didn’t think we’d be playing to anyone, thanks for coming.” The humble nature of the band was welcoming, and juxtaposed their caliber of professionalism with Ellery roaming around the stage, commanding it with her mic. Skye sat surrounded by his synths and keyboards, not showing too much emotion except for a minimal smirk or eye glare.
The set featured many cuts off their latest release, such as “Glasgow” and “Neon.” Fans jumped and chanted to the very polished “Greatest Hits” that seemed to blend pop from the 70s and music that hadn’t been invented yet. Jockstrap’s live renditions transitioned from tender ballads sung by Ellery’s whispers and guitar to ear-crackling bombastic tracks led by Skye’s production. The duo continue their US tour into late October where they conclude in Dallas, Texas, and with the jump from clubs like Zebulon Cafe last year to the Fonda this time around, the band will be growing continuously in popularity and style.
