Interpol Unearths the Other Side Of Make-Believe
NYC ICONS PERFORMED TO SOLD OUT OC CROWD ON CALIFORNIA TOUR
Interpol hasn’t left the road much lately. For the past couple of years, the New York City outfit has ricocheted from city to city, touching down in LA briefly last spring to headline Just Like Heaven Festival. In the time since their return, they’ve also released their anticipated and righteous seventh album, The Other Side Of Make Believe. Having recently concluded a string of shows with The Smashing Pumpkins, the group performed a short headline tour for the first time since last May, with the original lineup represented only by frontman Paul Banks and guitarist Daniel Kessler, as drummer Samuel Fogarino recovers from spinal surgery.
The 6-date California leg kicked off in the mirrored desert dust of cherished backyard venue Pappy + Harriet’s and included a stop in Del Mar before heading up the coast and reaching House Of Blues in Anaheim on Friday. Stoic and poised against silhouetting beams of light, Interpol shined as bright as ever with a setlist drenched in nostalgia, often opening with the ultra dark and dreamy “Untitled” from debut Turn On The Bright Lights, which just celebrated its 20th-anniversary last summer. The show remained primarily that of Turn On The Bright Lights but also maintained a generous mix of Antics tracks, the sophomore album that will mark the band’s second 20th-anniversary LP milestone in 2024. Despite what might have been primarily catalog, the band did play several songs from their latest, The Other Side Of Make-Believe, including the awe-inspiring “Toni” and the ever-alluring “Into The Night.” Interpol’s California tour continues and concludes October 29th and 30th at Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre.
